How to Get More Google Reviews as a Contractor (Without Being Pushy)

Brendan Makidon March 5, 2026 7 min read

Why Google Reviews Matter More Than Ever

In 2026, 93% of consumers read online reviews before hiring a service provider. For contractors, your Google review count and rating directly impact:

  1. Local Pack rankings (the map results at the top of Google)
  2. Click-through rates (higher ratings = more clicks)
  3. Conversion rates (prospects trust businesses with 50+ reviews)
  4. Customer confidence (especially for high-ticket services)
  5. The Simple System That Works

Step 1: Ask at the Right Moment

The best time to ask for a review is immediately after a positive interaction — when the customer compliments your work, when the final walkthrough goes well, or right after you've solved an emergency.

Step 2: Make It Ridiculously Easy

Send a direct link to your Google review page via text message. Don't send them to Google and expect them to find you. One tap, they're writing a review.

Pro tip: Create a short URL or QR code that links directly to your review form.

    Step 3: Follow Up Once

If they don't review within 48 hours, send one friendly follow-up text. That's it — never send more than one reminder.

Step 4: Respond to Every Review

Respond to every review — positive and negative. Thank happy customers by name. For negative reviews, stay professional, acknowledge the issue, and offer to make it right offline.

    What NOT to Do

  6. Never offer incentives for reviews (violates Google's terms)
  7. Never buy fake reviews (Google's AI detects them and penalizes you)
  8. Never argue publicly with negative reviewers
  9. Never gate reviews (only sending review links to happy customers is a gray area)
  10. Review Response Templates

    For positive reviews:

"Thank you so much, [Name]! We really enjoyed working on your [project type] and appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. We're here anytime you need us!"

    For negative reviews:

"[Name], we're sorry to hear about your experience. This doesn't reflect our standards, and we'd like to make it right. Please call us at (989) 331-8666 so we can discuss this directly."

How Many Reviews Do You Need?

A good rule of thumb: aim for more reviews than your top local competitor. If the #1 plumber in your city has 87 reviews, your target is 100. Consistency matters more than volume — aim for 5–10 new reviews per month.
